Beyond the mountains.
Past the places even dragons refused to fly...
lay the Curse Land.
It was not a kingdom built from stone.
It was built from forgotten hope.
The sky never changed.
The rivers carried black mist instead of water.
The trees whispered every regret ever spoken aloud.
And at its deepest point...
waited the Shadow King.
No throne.
No castle.
Only endless darkness.
He had no true body anymore.
He had become living shadow.
A black mist wrapped in armour that shimmered like cooled ash, forever changing shape as though smoke remembered the man it once belonged to.
Long ago...
he had been human.
Creative.
Curious.
Someone who dreamed impossible dreams.
But hope is a fragile thing.
Not destroyed in a single moment...
but stolen a little at a time.
One disappointment.
One betrayal.
One lonely night.
One voice whispering,
"You're not enough."
Until eventually...
the tiny spark that kept his soul warm disappeared.
Self-doubt filled the empty place.
Darkness answered.
Shadow took form.
His heart had never broken.
It had shattered into thousands of pieces...
and every piece became another shadow.
Years passed.
No one came.
No one searched.
The Curse Land simply became his prison.
Until...
one night...
the shadows themselves screamed.
Far away...
in Crystal Cove...
a young woman fought shadows of her own.
Not monsters.
Not demons.
The quiet ones.
The ones nobody else could see.
The ones that whispered...
"Give up."
The Shadow King felt them.
Every shadow in the world answered to him.
For the first time in centuries...
one fought back.
He watched through pools of darkness.
Hidden.
Silent.
Expecting another soul to fall.
Instead...
she stood.
Shaking.
Terrified.
Crying.
But still standing.
She carried a light so small it should have gone out long before.
Yet somehow...
it refused.
"...Impossible."
The word escaped him like smoke.
He had forgotten what stubborn hope looked like.
Night after night...
he watched.
Never close enough to be seen.
Only ever from the deepest shadows.
He learned her silence.
He learned she hid beneath blankets when the world became too loud in the tower when the sky turned mist to mist stars
while quietly carrying darkness of her own.
And something ancient inside him...
ached.
He wanted to go to her and ask her name.
To speak.
To tell her she wasn't alone.
But every time he stepped toward her or the idea he stopped himself.
the shadows wrapped tighter around him.
"Look at what you've become."
"You'll only frighten her."
"She couldn't survive your darkness."
"She deserves light..."
"Not you."
So he stopped.
Watching became enough.
Or at least...
that's what he told himself.
Because for all his power...
for all the kingdoms darkness obeyed...
the Shadow King feared only one thing.
Not heroes.
Not dragons.
Not magic.
He feared seeing fear in her eyes.
So he remained what he had always been.
A silent guardian hidden inside the mist.
Waiting.
Wanting.
Never believing he was worth walking into the light.
Somewhere in Crystal Cove, Vale looked toward the horizon where the Curse Land slept beneath endless twilight.
"The saddest curses," Vale whispered to herself, "are never the ones that turn people into monsters."
vale tilted her head.
"They're the ones that convince someone they already are."
And far away...
the Shadow King looked toward the abandoned tower the woman had hidden inside
not knowing that even shattered hearts can still hear hope calling their name if they only listen.
